Springborn breaks through for 1st win of the year

Jerry Wilinski took his fifth feature win in a row and seventh overall in a battle for the ages in the IMCA Modified feature Saturday night. Troy Springborn raced to his first Late Model feature win of the year. Travis VanStraten scored win No. 14 in the IMCA Stock Car class at Shawano Speedway. It was also his 30th win in competition this summer as he eyes up the national title. Jordan Barkholtz raced to his third IMCA Sport Mod win, while Hollie Welch also secured her third Mighty Four win. Late Models Brett Swedberg raced into the lead on the opening lap of the Late Model feature, while Doug Blashe moved to second. They stayed that way until a caution after lap nine bunched the field back up. On the restart, Springborn powered into second and Mitch McGrath moved to third in front of Blashe. Swedberg continued to pace the field until lap 13 when he got too high in turns one and two, opening the door for Springborn to take the lead. Swedberg dropped off the pace and ducked into the pits on lap 15. By this point in the race, Springborn had built up a big lead over McGrath but caution again came out after lap 19. Springborn had a flawless restart and kept McGrath at bay to win the race. McGrath took second, Blashe third, Taylor Scheffler finished fourth after starting 14th, Tim Buhler crossed the line in fifth. IMCA Mods Eddie Muenster went from sixth to first on lap one of the IMCA Modified feature and quickly looked to pull away. A lap four caution erased Muenster’s lead. With the restart on lap five, Muenster was joined by Wilinski, Jason Czarapata, and Marcus Yarie in a battle for the lead. The four cars raced together in one tight pack, circling the half-mile speedway like the Blue Angels in formation. Though Muenster continued to lead the race, all four drivers fought for position lap after lap. At one point Yarie, Czrapata, and Wilinski were three-wide for second place. Wilinski tried numerous times to get by Muenster, only to be turned back. Finally on lap 15, Wilinski made the pass on Muenster stick as Wilinski took the lead. Munester was then forced to go pitside with mechanical woes. This left Czarapata and Yarie to pursue Wilinski. Those three cars raced nose-to-tail over the closing laps with Wilinski winning the race. Czarapata had to settle for second, Yarie third, John Berna came from 20th to finish fourth, Mark Weisnicht took fifth. IMCA Stock Car The IMCA Stock Car feature saw Trent Nolan hold the lead for the first nine laps before giving way to VanStraten on lap 10. VanStraten held off Shawn Wagner for the second half of the race en route to victory. Dan Michonski outdueled Brandon Czarapata for third. Joe White finished the race in fifth. IMCA Sport Mods Austin Carter led the opening lap of the IMCA Sport Mod feature before Barkholtz took the lead away on lap two. Barkholtz led for the duration of the race, while point-leader Lucas Lamberies battled his way to finish second in the race. Jordan Bartz, Wyatt Block, and Jason Jach rounded out the top five. Mighty Four Welch built up a comfortable lead in the first half of the Mighty Four feature before Grant Kastning began to chip away. As the white flag flew, Kastning was right on Welch’s rear bumper. The two took the checkered flag side by side with Welch wining by the slimmest of margins. Brad Wedde, Calvin Stueck, and Lucas Hacker completed the top five. Dave Stoffer and Brian Welch were once again Spectator Eliminator victors. Racing will continue next Saturday night with a 6 p.m. start as part of the Shawano County Fair. Track champions will be crowned in all five divisions. More information can be found online at www.shawanospeedway.net. Race Summary SHAWANO SPEEDWAY Aug. 29 Late Model Feature: 1.
