A hit-and-run on Christmas Eve that left a pedestrian with serious injures was prefaced by a road rage incident, according to the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office.
Prior to the hit-and-run incident, the pedestrian had been in a blue Chrysler Sebring traveling north on U.S. Highway 41/141 before exiting at the County Road D exit in Abrams. An unidentified Volkswagen also had been traveling northbound on Highway 41/141 before exiting at County D.
The sheriff’s department said in a news release a road rage-type incident occurred between the occupants of the Sebring and Volkswagen, causing the Sebring to travel onto the median side shoulder of Highway 41/141 at one point.
Both vehicles then exited the highway onto the County D ramp where a passenger of the Sebring got out of his vehicle in an attempt to get the license plate number of the Volkswagen. This man was then struck by the Volkswagen, which fled the scene.
The Peshtigo man, 36, who was injured in the incident, remains in the hospital, Sheriff Mike Jansen said Friday. Jansen said the driver of the Sebring was the man’s brother, from Marinette.
The driver of the Volkswagen is believed to be a man in his 20s or 30s. He was the only occupant in the vehicle. Jansen said his vehicle probably did not sustain any damage.
The incident occurred about 2 p.m. Dec. 24. Anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run is asked to notify the sheriff’s department.
