Less than a decade ago, Alan Tomow was getting awards at the Shawano Athletic Booster Club’s fall banquet. This year, he was handing them out.
The new Shawano Community High School football coach, a 2006 graduate of the school, was one of the seven coaches handing out team awards and sharing their teams’ stories with student-athletes, their parents and coaches Tuesday night at The Gathering in Shawano.
“I’ve been on both sides here and gone through the lettering process,” Tomow said. “It’s a little less nerve-racking being on the other side than being on the coaching side.”
The coach said the event, put on in the fall and spring by the booster club, is important for student-athletes.
“It’s really important to recognize these kids and to show how far they’ve come,” Tomow said. “And to show all the work they’ve put in since August.”
Garret Schlise, a senior forward on the boys soccer team, said the event is a nice touch.
“I like that the booster club sets this up for us, to recognize all the athletes who put in a lot of time and work,” Schlise said. “I’ve been going since the beginning of August, so it means a lot to get recognized for that hard work.”
Schlise won three awards Tuesday: most valuable player, offensive most valuable player and team captain.
“Being recognized as MVP means a lot because it comes from my teammates,” Schlise said. “But I would have rather been at state than to get team MVP. I’m more of a team guy. I’ve been saying all year that it’s more important that our team does better than what I do.”
Sawyer Buck was named the soccer team’s defensive most valuable player and a team captain. Alex Retzlaff was also named a team captain.
The volleyball team had four seniors — Haley Going, Bella Gonzalez, Peyton Going and Kayla Going — and all were named team captains.
Haley Going was named the team’s most valuable player.
Ali Hanson was named most valuable player on the girls swim team. Emme Quandt was named most dedicated, and Sara Arens was named most improved. Shania O’Kimosh won the Team Spirit Award. Team captains were Ailysh Tetting, Malory Soper and Hanson.
The football team awarded Cody Urban the most valuable player award. The most valuable defensive player was Chase Henning, while the most valuable offensive player was Brice Bergner. The most improved player was Adam Bartz. The rookie of the year was Dylan Sumnicht.
Courtney Baumann was named the girls golf team’s most valuable player. Most improved player was Julia Beck.
Libby Buettner was the girls tennis team’s most valuable player and won the Team Player Award. Most improved player was Molly Hass. Sara Hockenstad was named most improved, Isabelle Carroll was named most dedicated.
Jake Klister and Teagan Monfils were named the boys and girls most valuable runners in cross-country. Lindsay Kurtz and Travis Geenen were named most dedicated. Sophia Holstrom and Austin Lhotka were named most improved. Coach’s awards went to Savannah Johnson and Hannah Williams, who tied for the award, and Cole Reuter.
