Only a handful of incumbent office holders — including two each from the Lena Village Board and the Oconto School Board — declared they are not running for re-election in April.
Incumbents were required to declare non-candidacy by Dec. 27 in order to give potential candidates time to circulate nomination papers by the deadline of 5 p.m. Jan. 7. That deadline was after this week’s Times Herald went to press, so a list of candidates will appear in the Jan. 17 edition.
Kris Alwin and Maria Roberts, who hold city seats on the Oconto School Board, are among local incumbents not seeking re-election, according to a list released by the Oconto County Clerk’s Office.
Lena Village Trustees Robert Borchert and Nicholas Steven Heise are also not running.
Maple Valley Town Chair Russel Brock decided not to seek another term. Mike Beyer, another member of the Maple Valley Town Board, chose not to run for re-election as a town supervisor and is instead running for the chairmanship.
Abrams Town Supervisor Debbie Annie Winans and Suring Village Trustee Terry Bengtson are also not seeking another term.
This year’s spring election is scheduled for April 7. If more than two candidates have filed for a given seat, a primary election will be scheduled for Feb. 18.
Two statewide races are on the ballot. Superintendent of Public Instruction Jill Underly is expected to run for a second four-year term, and two other candidates — Jeff Wright of Plain and Brittany Kinser of Wauwatosa — have filed campaign registration statements, but none of them had submitted nomination papers with the state Elections Commission as of the morning of Jan. 3.
Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley chose not to run for another 10-year term. As of Jan. 3, two candidates had submitted their papers and been approved for the April ballot, Brad Schimel, of Wauwatosa, and Susan Crawford, of Madison.
