Once again a first-time winner graced the Shawano Speedway winners circle.
Young Oshkosh racer Nick Furman held off Cody Hudson and Tracy Wassenberg to win a caution-filled IMCA Sport Modified feature.
Furman, who has raced at the track on a limited basis for the past two years and has been a member of fellow racer Joey Taycher’s pit crew, deftly guided his 2001 Cobra chassis to the first-place position.
Thus far, this season has been filled with first-time winners.
Hometown racer Cody Hokenstad bagged his first home track feature win two weeks ago. Shawano racer Grant Kastning also secured his first feature win two weeks back. Jordan Bartz, Rob Krull (grandson of racing legend Lyle “Pappy” Diemel), and Trent Nolan also made maiden voyages to the Shawano Speedway victory lane this season.
One of the best things about racing is seeing the joy, exuberance, and excitement when someone wins their first feature. The hard work, hard earned money and immense time put into becoming a successful racer all seem worthwhile when a racer scores a win.
As the season nears its halfway point drivers such as Austin Carter, Kasey Gross, Chad Olson, Kevin Feck, Lucas Lamberies, Jeremy Kazynski and Mark Rose look to be contenders to get their first Shawano Speedway feature wins.
Carter has led a number of laps already this season, but has been unable to seal the deal. Gross currently sits atop the Mighty 4s point standings and has won numerous events at other area tracks.
Olson is a true rookie in the IMCA Modified division and has shown steady improvement each week.
Feck has a few seasons of experience, but has really shown to be a contender this summer.
Lamberies is another rookie that has steadily shown he can race among the top five.
Kazynski is a racer that has done a lot with a little and, beginning last year, has shown flashes of brilliance.
Rose is an exciting racer to watch and is not afraid to be aggressive on the track.
One never knows week to week what the outcome will be. That’s why we watch.
