Boy Scout Aaron Gonnering from Oconto Falls Boy Scout Troop 1024 placed six Little Free Libraries in the city of Oconto Falls for his Eagle Scout project.
A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange.
Gonnering worked on the libraries over the summer and placed the libraries in mid-July. He customized each library to each location.
He also worked with the Oconto Falls High School woods department for the 6-by-6-inch posts that the libraries sit upon. Five of them have the 12 words of the Scout Law, and the sixth post is a “Peace Pole” donated by Girl Scout Troop 4312.
Gonnering”s sister, Emily, is a member of Troop 4312, and “May Peace Prevail on Earth” is written on the post in four languages. This post is located at the future site of the veterans memorial.
Each library was filled with 75 to 80 books to start, and Gonnering has been checking the boxes and keeping them filled with book donations he has received — approximately 1,000 books so far. A map showing the location of the libraries is located inside each library.
After a board of review in August, Gonnering was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. His badge will be awarded at a Court of Honor on Nov. 1 at Bear Paw Scout Camp.
