Former Stockbridge-Munsee president Robert Chicks pleaded no contest Thursday to one of the misdemeanor charges that sparked a recall effort and led to his removal from office.
Chicks was charged in Langlade County with a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer after giving a false name when pulled over by police in Antigo on Jan. 10. He was also charged with misdemeanor theft for allegedly using a tribal credit card to post his bond, and a misdemeanor count of bail jumping for missing a Feb. 18 court appearance.
Under a plea agreement, Chicks pleaded no contest to the obstruction charge. The other counts were dismissed.
Chicks was fined $100. He was also fined $200.50 for operating without a valid driver’s license.
Chicks did not address the court Thursday when asked if he had anything to say.
Tribal members voted 224-128 in April to remove Chicks from office over the Langlade County charges.
The vote was subsequently overturned by a tribal court, which ruled that Chicks was not given proper notice of the recall effort and called on the Election Board to set a new recall election.
The Election Board appealed, however, and asked for a stay on the tribal court decision, which was granted.
The Tribal Council voted 5-0 in August to remove Chicks. The vote means Chicks will not be eligible to run for office for four years, according to the Tribal Constitution.
