The Shawano County Arts Council provides entertainment in all forms throughout Shawano County and surrounding area. This fall, they have implemented two new events — a second art and craft fair and a new Christmas program.
The Merry Mielke Christmas Craft Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Mielke Arts Center.
“We talked about how wonderful the summer one was,” said Mary Madsen, SCAC president.
Cheryl Folkerts, who was chairwoman of the summer fair, has lined up 27 artists who will be showing a variety of work. She said there are only about two from the summer fair.
“A lot of them are local,” Folkerts said.
Also at the event, children can have a picture taken with Santa Claus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be bakery, including Christmas cookies, food from the Blue Bird Café in Clintonville and holiday music.
There is no admission but donations are appreciated to help support the SCAC.
On Dec. 6, “Seasonal Sounds” will be presented at 2 p.m. at the center. The Christmas program is sponsored by the Shawano Folk Music Festival.
“Most of them have performed at the folk festival over the years,” Folkerts said.
Performers Peter Roller, Robin Pluer and Stas Venglevski will present folk, jazz, pop, R&B and contemporary songs. Joel Kroenke and Dori Jerger are chairpersons for the event.
Tickets will be $15 and available soon at BMO Bank, Glas House, Beans & Books and the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce.
The concert is being presented in memory of Joyous Bowen, a longtime volunteer with the folk music festival and the SCAC.
The three components to the SCAC are the The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild, the Shawano Art and Craft Fair, and the Shawano Folk Music Festival. All proceeds from the events go back to the organization.
Anybody can join the SCAC. Although members work hard to present wonderful entertainment, there are mundane needs.
Currently they are working to get gallery lighting for the lobby so that artists’ paintings can be presented better.
“We’d like to have that done soon,” Madsen said.
The council also needs a new road sign, as the old one disintegrated earlier this year when it was taken down to blacktop the parking lot. They are hoping to get a digital sign, which can be rather expensive.
“We’re looking for more bids,” Madsen said. “We have partial funds.”
