Trevor Homan hit a walk-off RBI single in the seventh inning as the Bonduel American Legion team beat Wittenberg 6-5 Tuesday at Jack Reinke Field in Bonduel.
The two teams entered the seventh inning tied at 5-5. Solid pitching from Connor Rosin, in relief of Brandon Hagel, held Wittenberg scoreless.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wittenberg pitcher Cory Mortenson walked Jake Luepke. Logan Artis advanced him to second on a sacrifice, and Mortenson then walked Colton Dobratz.
A wild pitch to Homan advanced both runners, and Homan brought Luepke home on a fly ball to center field to end the game.
“We finally came up with the big hit,” Bonduel assistant coach Trent Wegner said. “We’ve had two one-run games in a row and we couldn’t come up with a big hit. We finally did.”
Both teams scored two runs in the third inning. Wittenberg (3-3) added runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while Bonduel (2-2) scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Homan led Bonduel, going three for four with an RBI. Brandon Hagel went two for four, with a two-run single in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Bonduel had 14 hits total.
“We have a lot of good kids here,” Wegner said. “So it’s no surprise to me that we had so many hits. We had to get the bat on the ball sometime.”
Hagel also pitched the first six innings, allowing five runs on six hits, walking four and striking out five.
“Hagel did a great job,” Wegner said. “He was awesome today. He did a great job.”
Rosin struck out two and allowed no runs and no hits in the final inning.
Mortenson allowed one run on one hit and walked two in his 1/3 inning of work for Wittenberg. Sam Szews allowed five runs on 13 hits, walked two and struck out two in six innings.
Wittenberg’s Tommy Froom got the scoring started in the third inning with a home run over the left field fence that also scored Nick Kapitz. Kapitz was two for four with one RBI. Dominic Anderson was two for three.
“Overall we played a real good game,” Wittenberg coach Dan Kapitz said. “Defensively, we had a few miscues that led to a couple runs for them. I thought Sam pitched a real good game. But you have to have the other end of that with the fielding.”
The game was delayed in the seventh inning when Colin Klumpyan dislocated his knee while batting and had to be assisted off the diamond. Wittenberg played the final inning with eight players.
