Backes Food Mart in Birnamwood will open the 15th Village Post Office (VPO) in the state on Tuesday.
The new postal center will be officially opened by brothers Dan and Dave Backes and Lori Rogney, area post office operations manager. The grand opening will be held at 1 p.m. at Backes Food Mart, 382 Main St., Birnamwood.
“My brother and I are partners and when we found out about this program we decided to offer it as a service to the community,” Dan Backes said. “Now customers can get postal services anytime we are open. So far the response has been positive.”
Backes Food Mart will provide Forever stamp sales, Priority Flat-Rate boxes, pre-paid package drop-off, and blue collection box pickup service.
Backes Food Mart is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sunday.
The Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities. VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service.
Since 2011 when the program began, close to 320 VPOs have opened throughout the country in gas stations, food marts and libraries.
“We’re hoping this will be a win-win situation for the Postal Service and our business,” Dan Backes. “We’ve been operating for 36 years and our quality is always consistent. We expect this to be the same.”
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
