The Central Wisconsin American Legion Baseball League will hold its first All-Star game Aug. 10 at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.
While the Fox Valley American Legion All-Star game, which will be played the same day, has been around for decades, this will be the first foray into all-star recognition for the Central Wisconsin Legion.
“I think it’s way overdue,” said Bonduel’s Jason Luepke, who will coach the North Division team because his team won the division last season. “I think it will promote Legion baseball and maybe get more kids to think about playing and playing harder. It’s not just one guy going to a Milwaukee Brewer game; it’s four or five players from each team.”
The game began with a conversation between Jon Majerus, manager of the Shiocton Legion team, and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers officials in 2012. A contract was finalized this year.
With the first pitch at 9 a.m., the game will feature players from North Division taking on players from the South Division.
Jake Luepke, Brandon Hagel, Dakota Knueppel and Trevor Homan will represent Bonduel on the All-Star team.
Menominee’s representatives are Lowell Chevalier, Rainer Shooter, Tom Williams and Dallas Madosh. Marion/Tigerton,
Clintonville, Wittenberg and Shiocton all have four players on the North Division team.
“I’m excited about it, can’t wait,” coach Luepke said. “I’m looking forward to what the All-Stars from each division can do.”
Luepke will be assisted by Wittenberg’s Dan Kapitz and Menominee’s Brandon Frechette.
Joe Robl, who won the South Division with Omro in 2012, will coach the South Division team. He will be assisted by Green Lake’s Gregg Danke, Weyauwega-Fremont’s Scott Hart and Berlin’s Mike Webb.
