The Bonduel High School football team opened its season Friday with a 39-0 nonconference win over visiting Crivitz.
“We were determined to start fast and we did that,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said. “We did a nice job coming out of halftime and controlling the second half.”
After going up 13-0 in the first half, Bonduel scored 20 points in the third quarter led by workhorse running back Hunter Vanderlinden.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound junior scored from 18 and 33 yards out, and racked up 160 yards on 16 carries for the game.
Hunter Berry, a 5-foot-4, 120-pound junior running back, had a pair of scores, including the first touchdown of the season on a fumble recovery in the end zone in the first quarter. He also punched it in from 5 yards out in the fourth quarter.
Westrich said the success of the running backs begins up front.
“It starts with our line,” Westrich said. “Our line did a really nice job of getting a push, creating seams. Then our backs took advantage of that.”
Bears quarterback Colton Dobratz found receiver Connor Rosin for a 5-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Dobratz finished seven of 16 for 140 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
“I was really happy with the way he handled the offense,” Westrich said. “Took control in the huddle, managed the game well. It was a good first game and hopefully he can build from here.”
