The Bonduel High School volleyball team overcame a slow start Thursday to push Weyauwega-Fremont to five games, but fell in the final, 15-9.
The Bears dropped the first two games, 25-15, 25-13, before putting things together.
“It kind of seems this season, I don’t know what it is, but they’re asleep that first game,” Bonduel coach Kim Bodoh said. “It kind of takes them some time to build up that momentum. We’re working on that, because we don’t have that time.”
Once it regrouped, Bonduel (1-1) won a close third game 25-22. The game was tied 9-9 before the Bears built a 19-15 advantage. Weyauwega-Fremont (1-1) rallied to pull within 24-22 before giving up the final point.
After the win, Bonduel rolled in the fourth game, jumping out to a 7-3 lead and forcing a Weyauwega-Fremont timeout. The Bears were soon up 17-6 and went on to win the game 25-10.
“They really bumped that intensity up,” Bodoh said. “That momentum led us into that fourth game and into a pretty well-played fifth game. That’s really the difference, the intensity and that really positive attitude.”
In the tiebreaker, Bonduel started with a 4-1 lead, but the two teams were knotted at 6-6 and traded points until Weyauwega-Fremont went up 12-7. Bonduel scored the next two points to pull within 12-9, but Weyauwega-Fremont held on to win 15-9.
Jenni Dowden, a 5-foot-11 junior middle hitter, battled with Weyauwega-Fremont’s Morgan Wilson, a senior middle hitter, all night. Dowden finished with 24 kills, while Wilson had 17 for the Indians.
“One thing I’m really proud of Jenni for, is she sees the court extremely well,” Bodoh said. “If they put up a three-person block on her, she’s going to tip it over. If they put a one-person block, she’s going to crush it down in the middle. But she really had to battle tonight against their middle.”
Deanna Zernicke led Bonduel in digs with 27. Courtney Schmidt had 28 assists.
Weyauwega-Fremont’s Megan Young had 10 digs, four blocks and three assists. Jardan Krause had 35 assists. Manni Potratz had 13 service points.
In junior varsity action, Bonduel lost 2-1 to Weyauwega-Fremont, losing the first two games 25-10, 27-25 and winning the last 25-20.
