Julia Collins, of Wauwatosa, claimed Best of Show in the “Go Green” show at the WOWSpace in Wittenberg with her work titled “Progress.”
This is the third award for Collins in WOW shows. She received an Award of Excellence in 2012 for “Arizona,” an oil portrait of a Native American woman potter, and an Award of Honor in 2011 for “Monty and Linda,” a watercolor of two frolicking horses.
In the center of “Progress” is a rich green primeval forest. Circling this are a series of pencil drawings depicting strip mining, a plane, piles of discarded tires, junked cars and empty oil barrels, a train, a clear cut stand of trees. The images are surrounded by a quote from Gordon Lightfoot remembering a time “when the majestic mountains stood against the sky, long before the white man and long before the wheel, when the green dark forest was too silent to be real.”
Awards of Excellence were earned by Bonnie Zuidema, Wausau, for “A Walk with Nature,” a photograph of a shoreline; Alan Clough, Eland, for “Morning Stroll,” a painting of a heron stalking her prey; and Tim Feathers, Schofield, for “Little Union River Porcupine Mountains,” a photograph, printed on aluminum, of a rushing waterfall crashing down a wooded hillside.
Awards of Honor were given to Cindy Markowski, Wausau, for her painting “October Lady and Friends,” a friendly green-faced witch; Mark Mittlesteadt, Rothschild, for “In the Shadows, a somewhat ominous painting of a gnarled tree and its roots with a mountain lion lurking in the background; and Sharon Rotz, Mosinee, for “Snag,” a soft sculpture centered around a bobber snarled in fishing line.
The WOWSpace extends its hours this weekend to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the Miles of Art tour, a countywide arts celebration.
The “Go Green” show continues in the WOWSpace from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 20. This show is sponsored by Ho-Chunk Gaming-Wittenberg
