The Hawks’ return to the playoffs will have to wait at least one more year.
First-year coach Alan Tomow had the Shawano Community High School football team knocking on the door of a playoff berth Friday night, but a tough Luxemburg-Casco team, also fighting for its playoff life, didn’t let that happen.
Shawano lost 44-7 on a cold and rainy night in Luxemburg.
About the only bright spot in the game for the Hawks (3-6, 3-5 Bay) was when Chase Henning scored on an 80-yard kickoff return immediately after the Spartans went ahead 23-0.
Henning also had 16 tackles.
The Shawano defense held strong in the red zone early, forcing the Spartans to a turnover on downs and a 31-yard field goal by Salvador Garcia on the Spartans’ first two possessions.
A 45-yard touchdown pass from Luxemburg-Casco quarterback Caleb Willems to Trevor Veeser started the second quarter.
The Hawks’ defense continued to be stingy, though, stiffening on their side of the field. As the Spartan offense sputtered, Garcia nailed kicks from 28 yards and 41 yards to put the Spartans up 16-0.
As time ticked away in the first half, Shawano drove to the L-C 1-yard line with 5 seconds left on the clock, but missed a 21-yard field goal.
Luxemburg-Casco fumbled twice deep in Shawano territory in the third quarter, but touchdowns by David Vlotho, on a 35-yard pass from Willems, and Cole Kirchman put Luxemburg-Casco ahead 30-7.
The Spartans started the fourth quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run by Alex Worachek to go up 37-7. Kirchman capped the scoring with a 40-yard run to the end zone with 8:40 left in the game.
Shawano quarterback Cole Huntington went 10 for 23 passing for 74 yards and had two interceptions. Will Cox had 13 yards on four carries and Shawano was held to just 59 yards rushing on the night.
Willem finished with 138 yards and two touchdowns on eight of 16 passes. Kirchman finished with 25 carries for 150 yards, while Worachek had 132 yards on 18 carries. The Spartans had 511 yards of offense.
