Public libraries across Wisconsin are gearing up to offer summer reading programs. At Shawano City-County Library, the program begins June 1 and runs through Aug. 15 and is available to patrons of all ages.
The children’s program is for ages birth through fifth grade, teen program for ages sixth grade through 17, and adult program for those 18 and older. Stop at the library to register and pick up your reading log.
Many performers, crafts and activities also are planned at the library this summer.
The lineup for the children’s program, “Every Hero Has a Story,” includes Tales of Heroes and Others, 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. June 9; Jump Up Family Music, 10 a.m. June 16; Hands 2 Grow Puppet Show, 10 a.m. June 23; The Graham Crackers, 10 a.m. June 30; KG & The Ranger, 10 a.m. July 7; and Fred Turk, 10 a.m. July 14. No pre-registration is required.
The popular “Read to a Dog” program will return from 10:30 a.m. to noon July 11 and Aug. 8. It requires pre-registration.
Make & Take Crafts will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 10, 17 and 24, as well as July 1 and 8. Stop in anytime during those hours to create super-hero masks, cuffs, capes, Lorax craft sticks and origami Baymax.
Children who complete the reading program earn incentive prizes, as well as a free book.
The teen program, “Read to the Rhythm,” will feature weekly programs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays during the summer. Beginning June 24, stop in each Monday from 1-4 p.m. to experience a surprise musical activity. Teen Tuesdays continue at 3 p.m. weekly with activities such as spoon tune, fart noise maker, ear bud speakers and holder, tin can golf and more. Treats and hands-on activities, such as T-shirt pillows, drawstring backpacks, guitar picks and more, will be offered from 12-4 p.m. Fridays.
Teens participating in the reading program will be entered into prize drawings throughout the summer.
The adult program, “Escape the Ordinary,” challenges participants to read outside the box by randomly picking a reading challenge that includes topics such as adventurers, heroic animals, literary heroes/villains, everyday heroes and more. Programs include DIY: Crafts and More from 4:30-6:30 p.m. June 22, July 27 and Aug. 27. Needles R’ Us will meet at 9 a.m. each Friday; bring your needlework and join the group.
Adults participating in the reading challenge will be entered in prize drawings.
The Scholastic Book Fair will run July 20-25. The book fair will feature children’s selections aged birth through sixth grade.
The Shawano City-County Library summer program will finish with the second annual summer picnic from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 12 at Shawano County Park. The picnic will feature an exploding watermelon contest and book-cart competition.
