Teens can continue to learn during the summer

School is out for the summer, but that does not mean learning needs to stop. Shawano City-County Library’s summer program for teens, “Read to the Rhythm,” will feature programs each Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Anyone ages 12 to 17 can drop in and participate. The activities for teens include creating T-shirt pillows, drawstring backpacks and guitar picks. Other activities include designing holders for ear bud speakers and tin-can golf. “I hope to make a creative opportunity for the kids to come in and express their creative freedom,” teen librarian Cathy Pescinski said. “Another hope is that maybe some of the nonreader kids can come into the library and discover reading.” Activities involving T-shirts are the most popular, Pescinski said, noting each program draws about 15 teenagers. Otherwise, the average is six to 10. Teens do not have to register for the program and can drop in any time during the activity. “The more the merrier. I usually set up for a minimum of 20,” Pescinski said. “Because we spread it out through a number of hours, we can actually accommodate more kids.” “It gives them a good opportunity to get together with their friends over the summer in a structured environment,” she said. Friday’s activity is CD scratch art. Teens can create designs using black tempera paint. The activities are scheduled from 12-4 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, and 1-4 p.m. Mondays beginning in July. Students also can register to win several prizes through the library’ summer reading program. Prizes include gift cards from Amazon, Charlie’s County Market, Maurice’s, Xbox and Kwik Trip. Pescinski said it is not too late for people to register in the summer reading program. “They can still register, still get involved in the program,” Pescinski said. “We still have the whole summer left to go.” Winners will be drawn Aug. 18.
