Merlin R. Gilbertson

Merlin R. Gilbertson, 87, Wittenberg, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, at his home. He was born on July 1, 1928, in Antigo, the son of the late Henry and Lillie (Schenk) Gilbertson. On Aug. 1, 1953, Merlin was united in marriage to Carol Ann Maahs in Wittenberg. She survives. Merlin was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of the Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post 502. He and Carol farmed in Shepley for a number of years. He also worked as an iron worker at the Oscar J. Boldt construction company. Merlin enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding motorcycle in his younger days. He also enjoyed collecting and cooking sap and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Carol Gilbertson, Wittenberg; seven children, Brian (Sue) Gilbertson, Wausau, Mike (Kim) Gilbertson, Wittenberg, Bruce (Linda) Gilbertson, Wittenberg, Julie (Jamie) Alzin, Maryland, Dennis (Dawn) Gilbertson, Hatley, Keith (MunHui) Gilbertson, Virginia, and Kris (Kevin) Murdock, Michigan; 15 grandchildren, Matthew, Nolan, Tracy, Carrie, Eric, Callie, Erin, Kacie, Ryan, Tyler, Brenda, Brett, Hannah, Austin and Emily; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nathalie (Bill) Fouch, Michigan. A Memorial Gathering will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg. Military rites will be conducted by the Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post 502 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a luncheon held at the Wittenberg Town Hall beginning at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established at a later date.
