A new donor is helping support the Clintonville Area Food Pantry. Starting Oct. 1, the pantry will benefit from NBC26’s Three-Degree Guarantee.
If the Green Bay television station’s chief meteorologist, Cameron Moreland, correctly forecasts the next day’s temperature within 3 degrees, the station will give $100 to the food pantry.
The program continues through Dec. 31 and comes at an opportune time for the pantry, which has received fewer donations this year than in previous years.
“We are down $4,000 to $5,000 this year, and we have had to cut down on some things to keep on going,” said David Schmidt, food pantry vice president. “We can’t give out enough for a week’s worth of food, but this will help us get back.”
Lois Renner, secretary for the food pantry, said the Clintonville pantry assists about 128 families, totaling about 400 people, in the Clintonville School District.
“This is an important service. There is always a need,” Renner said.
Schmidt said the pantry also receives donations from area churches, businesses, Feed America, individuals and the Clintonville Community Foundation.
“There are a lot of disabled people that are on SSI, some elderly are only on Social Security, some have personal problems with no money coming in,” he said. “It is a diverse population, and one person is 94 years of age. We feel this is a great benefit.”
A Channel 26 camera crew came to the food pantry on Monday to film and talk to the volunteers. Moreland will announce his forecast daily during the 10 p.m. newscast.
The 30-year-old food pantry, located in the old armory at 55 E. 12th St., is open from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Mondays and from 3-7 p.m. Thursdays.
