Q: What are the most common things you need a building permit for?
A: (Brian Bunke, zoning administrator/building inspector) The most common permit is for roofing, siding, fences and windows. The cost for any of these is $40. If you have any question about building permits or run down houses, please call me (715-526-6150) Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Q: Can I register or renew my car or truck license at the Police Department?
A: (Mark Kohl, city police chief) The Police Department offers vehicle registration and renewal services for cars, motorcycles and light trucks. We cannot register mopeds, print titles or replace vehicle titles. For truck registration, you must choose a weight class of A, B or C upon registering, meaning the truck and its cargo (this does not include towing) may not weigh more than: A-4,500, B-6,000 and C-8,000 pounds. If your vehicle needs a higher weight limit than 8,000 pounds, you will need to deal directly with the Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV office in Shawano is open Tuesday and Thursday only, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The fees for these transactions include the standard fees from the DMV, with an additional $19.50 for registrations and $10 for renewals when completed electronically at the Police Department. You must have the title and any lien releases at the time of registration. Please have the purchaser information filled out prior to coming in. For renewals please bring in your renewal notice, latest registration certificate, or the license plate number and the last four digits of the VIN number.
Q:What does it cost to use the Recreation Center? What services are available?
A:(Matt Hendricks, park and recreation director) An individual membership for the year is only $33! Or, if you prefer, you can pay $2 per visit. Our facility has a warm 84-degree pool for you to enjoy. We have swimming lessons for those as young as 18 months. Residents in their 80s and 90s utilize the pool too. We also have exercise and therapeutic classes that will help you stay in shape or recover from joint surgery. We also have a full exercise room with free weights, machine weights, ellipticals, treadmills, bikes and other equipment to help you stay healthy. Or, join us on one of our racquetball courts. Q: When do operators license applications need to be brought in to City Hall and what do I need to bring with me?
A: (Lesley Nemetz, deputy clerk) All applications for beverage operator’s licenses must be in to City Hall at least one week prior to the council meeting in which they will be acted upon. For example, the November council meeting will be held on Nov. 11, so all applications need to be submitted by Nov. 4.
If you are applying for a new license, please be sure to bring your completed class certificate and driver’s license/state ID with you. If you have held a beverage operator’s license in another Wisconsin municipality and it is still valid, you can bring that with you instead of the completed class certificate. If you are simply renewing your city of Shawano license, you only need to bring your driver’s license/state ID. Please note that your current Operator’s License cannot have expired more than two years ago if you are trying to renew. The cost of a two-year Operator’s License is $30 and is payable at the time of application. It is non-refundable.
