Shawano County authorities will continue extra drunken driving enforcement through the weekend as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
The holiday season crackdown began Dec. 18 and ends Sunday.
The campaign involved officers from all over Wisconsin and throughout the nation who patrol in greater numbers and for longer hours to arrest impaired drivers and get them off the road.
“The goal is not to arrest more drunken drivers,” Shawano County Sheriff’s Lt. George Lenzner said. “The goal is to deter drunken driving, so that we can reach our ultimate goal of zero preventable traffic deaths.”
Numerous agencies throughout Wisconsin were given grant money for this operation, however Shawano County was not selected. Shawano County decided to participate, anyway, by having officers keep on alert for impaired drivers.
Last year, there were 162 fatalities in Wisconsin in alcohol-related crashes.
“Although we’re making progress in preventing drunken driving, too many people are still being killed or injured because of the irresponsible decision to drive while impaired,” Lenzner said.
