We are turning the calendar to a whole new year, with all of the hopes and promises that a new year can bring. 2016 is going to also be a leap year.
It seems weird to me as to how we get an extra day in a year now and then. After all, this is 2016, with all of the modern technology, and we still get that extra day. What is up with that?
Many times the days between Christmas and New Year tend to drag by slowly. Often I stock up on books from the library and sit and read for hours on end. Not so this time, as life kept me humming along.
A brother-in-law died, so some of us made a flying trip to and from the funeral in the Waukesha area on the day after Christmas. Then I hosted my kids and grandkids the next day at my house. While the funeral was a somber occasion, the family gathering was just plain fun, as I enjoyed playing games with my grandkids. I was so occupied with Uno Attack and Monopoly that I managed to miss the whole Packers game that day, but could keep track of how things were going, by all of the moaning and groaning going on in the living room.
Then the storm hit later on Monday, and my sister-in-law and my nephew came to stay at my house, as their husband and father was going to be buried in the Tigerton cemetery on Tuesday. While the storm provided a concern, everything worked as expected, and the casket was delivered. The burial took place, with the Tigerton Legion giving the 21-gun salute. Taps were played for this veteran.
I know that when you read this on Saturday, New Year’s Eve and Day have already passed; however, since I am writing this on Dec. 29, who knows what could happen by the time they arrive. I expect to spend them both quietly at home with some of my favorite movies.
Over the past few years, I usually ushered in the New Year watching the BBC version of “Jane Eyre.” I am not quite sure why I choose that one, because it is not a holiday movie, but it somehow seems fitting, and that version is about three hours long.
I question my ability to stay up until midnight this year, as I have been a sleepyhead of late, but we will see how it goes. As far as New Year resolutions go, I will continue to try to lose 10 pounds a year, through choosing healthy food and getting as much exercise as my body will allow. I didn’t quite make it come true this year, but I was close. Ten pounds may not seem like much; however, anything is an improvement.
Another pipe dream of mine is that I keep my house decluttered. I am beginning to face the reality that it is more a pipe dream than anything that I can accomplish. There is simply too much clutter that arrives in my mailbox. It all seems to pile up, and there is no clear place to put millions of address labels, note pads and calendars.
Oh yeah, I did need one calendar to keep track of 2016.
