LaVerne C. Birkholz

LaVerne Charles “Vern” Birkholz, 81, of Shawano, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016. Vern was born in Black Creek on April 19, 1934, to the late Roman and Gladys (Plantert) Birkholz. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country until he was honorably discharged. Following his time in the service, Vern worked as a manager for Land O’ Lakes Cheese Factory for many years until retiring. On July 12, 1991, Vern was united in marriage to Connie Terrio at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano. The couple enjoyed travelling together, including trips to Europe and Alaska, as well as several winters in Florida. Vern loved the outdoors and in his free time enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting (especially squirrel hunting). He spent many hours reloading his own shells for hunting and was also an avid reader. Vern is survived by his wife, Connie; three stepchildren, Pete (Lori) Hintz, of Shawano, Paul (Sue) Hintz, of Shawano, and Mary (Ron) Laude, of Pella; six stepgrandchildren, Nathan Hintz, Jessica Rossi, Jennifer (Nolan) Hon, Corey Hintz, Amy Hintz and Heidi (David) Burris; 13 great-stepgrandchildren; a sister, Jan (Bill) Thompson; a brother-in-law, Fred Ziegler; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Ziegler, and his parents. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano with the Rev. Scott Ludford officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 117. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
