The snow arrived at the Navarino Wildlife Area last week with around a foot of snow falling on the grounds, and nature center staff and volunteers have started grooming the cross-country ski trails.
Snowshoes and ski rental are available at the nature center during regular hours: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The sledding hill also is ready. There is no fee to use the sledding hill or the trails, but guests are asked to consider a donation to offset equipment and time expenses in grooming the trails.
Fees for winter programs are $4 for nature center members, $6 for nonmembers and $12 for families. Snowshoe rentals are an additional $2 for children 15 and younger and $4 for 16 and older. Ski equipment rentals are $5 for children, $10 for adults.
Here is a list of activities at the center in January.
- Want to see some wildlife on a winter hike on snowshoes? Come at 9 a.m. Thursday for a snowshoe hike past the porcupine dens of Navarino. This will be a slow-paced snowshoe hike. Please RSVP.
- A winter walk and introduction to snowshoeing will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday. Participants, led by a naturalist, will explore the forest and bog for animal tracks.
- There will be a candlelight snowshoe/ski hike from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 15. Staff and volunteers will light a 1-mile loop across the boardwalk and back with candles. Please RSVP.
- NNC staff will hold a one-hour introduction to cross-country skiing at 9 a.m. Jan. 16. Learn the basic kick and glide, stopping and turning. Please RSVP.
- Snowshoe across the bog and search for porcupines at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 23.
- Miss the first cross-country ski introduction? A second one-hour lesson will be offered at 11 a.m. Jan. 23. Please RSVP

Also, “Frozen Fun” returns to the NNC from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 13. There will be horse-drawn sleigh rides, skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, “Frozen” themed games, a costume contest, crafts, food and possibly a visit from Elsa the snow queen and Olaf. There are fees for some of the activities and a $5 per person fee for the sleigh rides.
