The Bonduel High School girls basketball coaching staff was able to get a good look at many of its reserve players on the court Thursday night, but not by choice.
After senior forward Taylor Weier went down with an ankle injury and Danee Collier exited after an apparent concussion, along with Hayley and Emily Sorenson missing the game for school violations, it was time for many new faces to step up.
The task wasn’t easy, and a quick Shiocton team used a 14-5 run to open the second half to secure a 56-42 victory in Bonduel.
“I think the kids off the bench played really well. I couldn’t be happier,” Bonduel head coach Jerry Reinke said. “They haven’t gotten much time up to this. Obviously, they were a little rusty probably, but all the kids gave us good minutes.”
The Bears (6-4, 3-2 Central Wisconsin Conference-8), who hadn’t played a game since a 20-point victory over Suring on Dec. 21, were sparked by the energy of Brittany Wudtke, along with Brynn Reinke and Becca Carpenter.
“Credit to them,” Shiocton head coach Rob Hendrickson. “We come in here and beat them by (14) and they had four starters that didn’t play most of the game. I don’t expect to play that way, but that’s what happens, I guess.”
Bonduel fell behind early with some missed shots, but jumped to a 17-10 advantage following a 15-2 run over the span of 8 minutes and 26 seconds.
The Chiefs (7-4, 4-1 CWC-8) started the second half on a 4-0 run before Weier was sidelined. They kept the pressure on the hosts for the majority of the second half to ease to victory.
With Weier out, the Bears needed someone to attack the basket and score points.
“I thought Brittany Wudtke did a heck of a job,” Reinke said.
Wudtke scored a team-high 11 points, including five free throws.
Weier, who had four rebounds, and Kailee Pedersen each scored seven points. Pedersen and Collier both had four steals.
“I think they just gave us some energy. They played hard. It’s something that, especially when you’ve sat there for a long time, it’s hard to give everything. They came in, gave us some juice on the defensive end,” Reinke said. “We hung around, we just couldn’t finish it.”
Shiocton had four players reach double-digit scoring, as the Chiefs found easy layups after forcing turnovers or breaking the Bonduel press.
