Shawano police nabbed four drunken drivers in as many hours early Sunday, including two arrested driving the same vehicle in separate incidents.
According to police reports, one of the drivers taken into custody called someone to pick up her car, but the person she called had apparently also been drinking and was arrested a short time after retrieving the vehicle.
Police Chief Mark Kohl said the arrests were made during routine patrol, and there was no special enforcement operation underway.
He said the unusually high number of arrests in such a short period of time was the result of “a bunch of motorists making bad decisions.”
“We had a great group of officers out there over the weekend,” Kohl added.
The spate of drunken driving arrests started about 12:15 a.m. when a vehicle was pulled over at Lieg Avenue and Water Street after police spotted the vehicle traveling left of the center lane.
Police arrested a 67-year-old man for first-offense operating while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. According to the police report, a preliminary breath test showed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit.
About 1:10 a.m. police pulled over a vehicle in the 1200 block of East Green Bay Street, after it was spotted doing 45 mph in a 25 mph zone.
Police arrested a 25-year-old man for first-offense OWI after his initial breath test showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.12 percent.
About half an hour later, police pulled over a vehicle at Fifth and Franklin streets for having a passenger side headlight that was burned out.
Police observed beer cans and an open case of beer inside, according to the report. The report states a preliminary breath test showed the driver, a 26-year-old woman, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19 percent.
The woman was taken into custody for OWI and an outstanding warrant. She contacted someone to come and pick up her vehicle.
Shortly after 4 a.m., police spotted that same vehicle, according to police reports, going 36 mph in a 25 mph zone.
The vehicle was pulled over at Bartlett and Green Bay streets.
Police subsequently took the driver, a 41-year-old woman, into custody for second-offense OWI.
According to the report, police asked the woman if she had been drinking. She stated she had been drinking earlier until she passed out at home and was woken up to help out a friend and get her car.
