Two top administrators of the Shawano School District have been hired in Gillett.
On Thursday, the Gillett School Board approved the administrative contracts of Gillett native Todd Carlson, Shawano superintendent for the past six years, and Steve Linssen, associate principal of Shawano Community High School.
Carlson was hired as superintendent to replace Kyle Ransom, who resigned in June.
Linssen was hired as secondary school principal to replace Jeremy Pach, who resigned in August. Linssen previously worked as a student teacher in Gillett.
The Shawano School Board on Tuesday released both men from their contracts with that district.
Miles Winkler, president of the Gillett School Board, said the board was looking for someone with experience to lead the district.
“To have him come in here with his experience, knowledge, demeanor — he has the whole package,” Winkler said.
Carlson was employed by the Suring School District for 19 years, working up to high school principal and then school superintendent. After five years as administrator in Suring, he accepted the position in Shawano.
Carlson, who met Thursday with the Gillett School Board, said his initial goal is “bringing back pride to Gillett.” He said he looks forward to working with the staff at Gillett.
“They’re on a good track,” he said.
In an email sent to Shawano media outlets announcing his resignation, Carlson said he was leaving for a variety of reasons.
“This has been a very difficult decision as I am extremely proud of the numerous positive achievements put in place in the Shawano School District over the past several years from people working together,” he said in his statement.
He said he is leaving the district on sound financial footing, demonstrated by increasing student growth and local tax rates that are below the state average.
“There are countless relationships that will be very hard to leave,” Carlson said. “I will always have a place in my heart for the many fine, dedicated professional people who have supported and made a commitment to the students and community of the Shawano School District.”
Carlson received his superintendent certification from Winona State University, his master’s degree from Marian College in Fond du Lac, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Carlson was receiving $135,294.16 in salary and $37,955.58 in benefits annually in Shawano.
The salary and start date for Gillett's new administrators were not finalized prior to the Shawano board's action Tuesday.
Ransom’s annual salary was $96,530, with an additional $21,630 in benefits. Pach earned $80,922 and $13,185 in benefits.
