Lions recognized for volunteer projects

The November meeting of the Oconto Falls Lions included a double recognition ceremony for President Bret Iverson’s Lion of the Month award. Leonard Burns was recognized as the October Lion of the Month in recognition of another successful season of Panther football raffles at Memorial Field. Burns attended every home game, brought the raffle equipment, kept track of the collection, and presented the proceeds to the night’s winners and the community recipient. Planning began in the early summer when the designated charities were identified. Tom Clark was named the November Lion of the Month in recognition of his work with eye glass collections, as Lions Foundation associate. Each club needs a Lions Foundation associate to serve as the connection between the local club and the Wisconsin Lions Foundation. The Lions Foundation is involved with many statewide projects, including the eyeglass recycling program. The Wisconsin Lions became a part of the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center program in 1994. However, they have been collecting used eyeglasses for more than 30 years. The center utilizes a local correctional system as a source for processing collected eyeglasses. Having established a permanent clinic in Mexico, representatives from the center make annual mission trips there, as well as to Jamaica. Clark has organized the local collection effort through recycling buckets in businesses and school offices in the community.
