Those who served in the armed forces will be remembered at Memorial Day services around the area.
Spruce
Doney-DeGrave American Legion Post No. 342 will lead a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. at Pine Hill Cemetery in Spruce.
Lena
Members of Doney-DeGrave American Legion Post No. 342 will join other veterans and the Lena High School band in a parade down Lena’s Main Street at 1 p.m. Memorial Day. A program at St. Charles Cemetery, east of Lena, will follow.
A graveside dedication for Civil War veteran Pvt. Joseph J. Kramer, buried in St. Charles Cemetery, Lena, will take place at 2 p.m. at the cemetery. Company E, 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of Manitowoc will perform the ceremony. The public and all local veterans are invited to attend.
Oconto Falls
The Eick-Sankey American Legion Post 302 and Legion Auxiliary will conduct the 10 a.m. service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oconto Falls. Oconto Falls native Army Col. Andrew Meverden will speak. Meverden retired in December as the Colorado National Guard’s state command chaplain.
Gillett
Gillett VFW member Don Rooney will speak at 10 a.m. at the Memorial Lot in Gillett where Krause Simpson American Legion Post 300 will hold its Memorial Day service.
Mountain
The Zitske-Estabrook VFW Post 2119 of Mountain and Northern Oconto County will hold its Memorial Day services at 9:30 a.m. at the Mountain, Doty, Riverview Cemetery in Mountain, located by Tabor Lutheran Church. All veterans are invited to march in with the VFW. After the ceremony, Post 2119 will serve doughnuts and refreshments at the church.
If it rains, the ceremony will be moved to Tabor Lutheran Church.
Wabeno
Wabeno American Legion Sylvan Post 44 will honor American heroes and remember their sacrifices during a Memorial Day ceremony at 10:45 a.m. Monday, May 25, at the Veterans War Memorial Park in Wabeno. The color guard and the Wabeno High School Band will take part. U.S. Marine veteran Gable Cundiff will be the guest speaker. New bleachers have been purchased for seating.
All veterans, their families and the public are invited. Because of limited parking space at the park, a shuttle bus will be available from the Wabeno American Legion Post and the Wabeno Town Hall starting at 9:30 a.m.
In case of inclement weather, the Memorial Day event will be held at Wabeno High School.
