Suring High School sophomore John Christensen advanced to the WIAA Division 3 state track championship in La Crosse as an extra qualifier in the high jump.
The sophomore placed fifth in the high jump at Friday’s Rosholt sectional, clearing the bar at 6 feet. When the other sectional results were reported, he was named one of two additional qualifiers.
In Division 3, the top four finishers in each event advance to the state finals, with additional qualifying standards determined by all sectional performances.
Marathon won the boys sectional. Newman Catholic finished second and Rosholt third. Suring took 18th among 27 schools.
In the girls sectional, Suring junior Az VanBellinger was .47 seconds from qualifying for the state finals in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 27.92 seconds to take fifth.
Newman Catholic won the girls meet, with Wild Rose in second and Spencer in third. Suring was 18th.
