Students at Oconto Falls High School recorded “fantastic” scores on the ACT test, a standardized achievement test administered to high school juniors.
OFHS Principal Bruce Russell presented the ACT results to the School Board on Monday. He said changes at the high school have yielded positive results. The changes include new math and English curriculum and Response to Intervention (RtI), an academic assistance process.
The ACT composite score of 23.6 recorded by the 2015 graduates ranked higher than the state average (22.2) and higher than the previous OFHS results (22.8).
“We were expecting good scores, but that is just fantastic,” Russell said.
The ACT results of the OFHS Class of 2016 (21.1) also topped the state average (19.9).
Falling from an ACT score of 23.6 to 21.1 in consecutive years reflects a change in testing standards, Russell reported. It was the first time all students in the junior class, including special education students, were tested.
In previous years, college-bound juniors traveled to testing centers for the ACT, which was an admissions requirement of most colleges. This year, 124 juniors were tested at the high school on March 1. That compares to about 70 students tested the previous year.
