Fire Prevention Week is from Oct. 4 through Oct. 10, with the 2015 theme being “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!” This nationwide event was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and to bring public attention to fire safety practices.
At the very same time that the Great Chicago Fire was burning, the Peshtigo Fire was causing widespread damage in northeast Wisconsin. In fact, a large area in the township of Morgan burned during the Peshtigo Fire of 1871.
Our very own Green Valley-Morgan Fire Company takes Fire Prevention Week seriously and plans to spend the day at Fairview Elementary School in Krakow on Thursday, Oct. 8, to give students some hands-on experience in fire safety.
Students will gain confidence to take proper action if they are confronted with a fire in their own home. Smokey Bear may just make an appearance this year again as well.

Historical neighborly note: Based on the 1912 Oconto County Plat Book, there were three school houses in the town of Morgan at that time, each located along current County Road C. Some of these school houses still stand today and have been converted into homes.
Mark your calendars for some dates to remember. The next regular Morgan Town Board meeting is 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at the Town Hall. Also, there is a public hearing for the 2016 town budget at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at the Town Hall, with a special town meeting immediately following for the purpose of adopting the 2016 budget and levy.
