Oconto County Public Health will visit Oconto County schools in October to offer free flu vaccines to all students, ages 3 to 18, in early childhood to 12th grade. The flu mist and flu shot will be offered to all students in elementary, middle and high schools.
Oconto County Public Health also will offer free Hepatitis A, HPV and meningitis vaccines to all sixth- to 12th-graders.
Parents of children who did not bring home a consent form for the free flu vaccinations may download a form at www.ocph.info. Click on “Influenza.” A completed, signed consent form is required for each student receiving any vaccine.
Oconto County Public Health will visit schools on the following dates: Gillett, Tuesday, Oct. 27; Lena, Wednesday, Oct. 28; Oconto Elementary, Wednesday, Oct. 21; Oconto Middle School, Monday, Oct. 19; Oconto High School, Thursday, Oct. 22; Abrams Elementary, Friday, Oct. 16; Oconto Falls Elementary, Wednesday, Oct. 14; Washington Middle School, Tuesday, Oct. 20; Falls Alternative Learning Site, Tuesday, Oct. 20; Oconto Falls High School, Tuesday, Oct. 13; St. Anthony School, Tuesday, Oct. 13; St. John’s School: Thursday, Oct. 29; and Suring School, Thursday, Oct. 29.
The flu is not just a bad cold. It is a serious disease that can lead to complications such as pneumonia, even in healthy children. The symptoms can last for up to two weeks and include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, severe body aches, chills, runny or stuffy nose, extreme exhaustion, and sometimes in children, diarrhea and vomiting.
Getting a flu shot every year is the best protection against the flu. People can also stay healthy by washing their hands frequently, covering their cough and staying home when they are sick.
