Within the last two weeks, the Oconto Area Humane Society & Animal Shelter Inc. took in two dogs that are in need of medical care that is above and beyond normal veterinary exams.
The first dog is Zola, a 7-year-old Shih Tzu mix, who needs to have several teeth extracted due to decay and who also suffers from a condition known as chronic dry eye. This condition has affected her eyesight but has not slowed her down. Unfortunately, chronic dry eye cannot be surgically corrected but can be treated to prevent further loss of sight.
The second dog is a 3-month-old Rottweiler named Sophie. The puppy was born with a defective hip and will require a femoral head ostectomy surgery to correct it.
Local veterinarians are working with the shelter on a treatment plan for each dog and are willing to donate a large part of the surgery cost, but the OAHS will still need to cover approximately $500 worth of medical bills per dog.
The OAHS believes the animals deserve proper medical care to ensure the highest quality of life possible. With the recommended surgeries, both Zola and Sophie can look forward to many happy, playful years, and the shelter is confident that both dogs will quickly find their forever homes once their health issues have been addressed.
