Breann Johnson, of Gillett, participated in a mentorship program at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, coordinated by Assistant Professor Amanda Barnett. The mentorship program, now in its third year, involves students majoring in human development and family studies (HDFS) with the goal of building the HDFS community.
Johnson’s mentor was Molly Harvey, a senior from Cottage Grove who hopes to find a job working with at-risk youth in Madison after graduating. Johnson, a junior transfer student, said the program helped her prepare for upcoming courses and get a better insight into their content and required projects.
“I have become more excited for my major and I have appreciated the opportunity to connect with a student who has more experience and is further along in the program,” she said.
HDFS 101 is offered every semester, and the mentorship program is part of every class. The student pairs are required to meet once in class and are encouraged to meet outside of class.
Students in HDFS 101 are freshmen, transfer students or students who have changed majors. This fall, 60 students in the 101 course were matched with 26 mentors.
