Catherine “Dolly” A. Karban, 94, Coleman, went to her eternal life on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. The youngest of five children was born on Jan. 26, 1921, in Oconto Falls to Joseph and Katherine (Lorenz) Schuessler.
Dolly grew up in Oconto Falls, where she attended St. Anthony Catholic School and later Oconto Falls High School, graduating with the Class of 1939. Following graduation, she went to work in Green Bay for Freeman Paper Mill and St. Vincent Hospital.
On July 6, 1946, she married Arthur Karban at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Following their marriage, the couple owned and operated a family farm in rural Coleman until 1981. Not only did Catherine do sunup to sundown farming and housewife chores on a daily basis, she also made certain delicious daily meals were prepared for neighbors and field workers. It’s been said no one ever left Catherine’s home hungry.
She and her husband also raised capons, which they’d butcher, sell and deliver without ever advertising their product.
Dolly was a longtime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Klondike, where she belonged to the Altar Rosary Society and stayed active in numerous parish activities. She volunteered for over 25 years for the CMH Auxiliary in Oconto Falls and was a member of the Oconto County Homemakers.
Dolly will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved caring for young children and as a dear friend to many people.
Survivors are her three children, Paul Karban and Kim (fiancé Jay Goddard) Karban, all of Coleman, and Julie (Bradley) Schaal, Gillett; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Myrtle Karban, Coleman; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2002; an infant son, Darrell; three brothers, Nick, Ed and Bob Schuessler; one sister, Cora Prust; and great-granddaughter, Jalyn Schaal.
Visitation was held from 3-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls, with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation continued after 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls until the time of the service. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Bob Karuhn officiating. Burial followed in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery, Klondike.
The Karban family would like to thank Unity Hospice for the care given Catherine since October.
