The former treasurer of the Breed Sportsman’s Club was charged Jan. 9 with embezzling at least $17,000 from the club’s checking and savings accounts three years ago.
Robin Renee Strehlow, 64, of Suring, was ordered to make an initial appearance before Oconto County Judge Jay Conley at 2 p.m. Feb. 13, to face a felony charge of theft in a business setting.
According to the criminal complaint, the matter came to light after a banquet facility contacted Club President Jeff Tienor on Feb. 9, 2022, to complain that the club’s check had been returned because of insufficient funds.
During the club meeting in January 2022, Strehlow had reported the checking account had a balance of $4,639.72 and the savings account stood at $10,003.32, the complaint said. When Tienor checked with the credit union, he found the checking had a zero balance and savings was at $14.28.
A subsequent investigation found 31 ATM withdrawals from checking and another 21 withdrawals from savings between August 2020 and February 2022, totaling $8,221, the complaint said. Another $2,568 had been transferred directly to Strehlow’s personal bank account. She was the only one who held a debit card for those accounts, according to the complaint.
Another $300 was unaccounted for during that time, and $1,781.90 had been used to pay Strehlow’s personal cellphone bills, for a total of $12,870 that could be documented.
Tienor told authorities he had met with Strehlow and she admitted stealing around $17,000 from the club but promised to pay it back, the complaint said. Tienor said he still wanted to pursue embezzlement charges.
It is not apparent from the criminal complaint why the charge was not filed until now.
