Wisconsin had 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending July 28, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Fieldwork included harvesting hay, small grains and some potatoes. Topsoil moisture condition rated 1% very short, 8% short, 80% adequate and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 5% short, 78% adequate and 17% surplus. Corn silking reached 58%, two days ahead of last year and one day ahead of the five-year average. Fifteen percent of the corn crop has reached the dough stage. Corn condition was rated 62% good to excellent, up one percentage point from last week. Soybeans blooming was 65%, two days behind last year and three days behind average. Thirty percent of soybeans were setting pods. Soybean condition remained at 60% good to excellent. Eighty-six percent of oats had colored. Twenty-seven percent of the oat for grain crop had been harvested, four days ahead of last year and five days ahead of average. Oat condition was 79% good to excellent, one percentage point above last week. Winter wheat harvested for grain was 68% complete, one week ahead of last year and the average. Winter wheat condition was rated 78% good to excellent, three percentage points below last week. The second cutting of alfalfa hay was 88% complete. The third cutting was 29% complete, one day behind last year but two days ahead of average. All hay condition increased to 78% good to excellent, up three percentage points from last week. Potato harvest was 11% complete. Potato condition increased to 90% good to excellent, up one percentage point from last week. Pasture and range condition remained at 70% good to excellent.
