Shawano’s No. 1 doubles tennis team of George Buerman and Tristan Sheldon made it to the state meet for the second year in a row after a successful day at WIAA sectionals at the Western Racquet and Fitness Club in Green Bay.
On the line were state tournament berths for N0. 1 and No. 2 doubles and a sectional championship for No. 3 doubles.
The No. 3 duo of Dominic Badalamenti and Mason Sparks ended their Cinderella journey with a fourth-place sectional finish. Sparks and Badalamenti lost 6-0, 6-0 to Appleton East, then fell to Bay Port 6-3, 6-2.
The No. 2 team of Tristan Tetting and Isaac Welander lost 6-0, 6-0 to De Pere in the first round and then battled back to win the third-place match 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 over Bay Port.
Sheldon and Buerman qualified for the WIAA state tournament for the second year in a row with a 6-4, 6-0 first-round win over Appleton North. After a similar 6-4, 6-0 loss to Kimberly, the duo finished the sectional tournament with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over conference rival West De Pere to finish in third place.
They will compete in the state tournament May 30 to June 1 at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.
Pulaski’s Aran Capella, playing No. 3 singles, initially lost 6-2, 6-1 to Kimberly but finished in third with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Green Bay Preble.
Donovan Holderness, at No. 4 singles, had a similar day. He lost 6-0, 6-1 to Kimberly, then finished in third with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ashwaubenon.
