Work on North Airport Drive north of Green Bay Street in Shawano is expected to begin in early April after the Shawano Common Council approved a memorandum of understanding with Shawano County on March 13.
The project is expected to cost $425,000, with the city’s portion being $199,500. The city budgeted $200,000 in 2024 for the paving of North Airport Drive and a portion of Estates Lane.
The county will be paying for the travel lanes, which are 12 feet wide either way, while the city is responsible for the shoulders, which will be 6 feet wide on each side, as well as any needed adjustment of city-owned manholes and valves. The work will be on the segment of Airport Drive from Green Bay Street to Gumaer Road, about 0.61 mile.
“Improvements for this would 4 1/2-foot paved shoulders along Airport (Drive), which I know that (Shawano) Pathways had really kind of drove home that they would like to see some paved shoulders out there to keep the bikers,” said Scott Kroening, public works director. “There’s also a little bit of pedestrian traffic out there that this would help.”
Besides the shoulders, the project is expected to include more culvert piping, according to Kroening.
“We’re trying to drain that area and make it the best we can,” he said.
The county is working on the project because the segment of road is technically County Road HHH, even though it is designated in the city limits as Airport Drive. It is the first road project of the year for the county, Kroening told the council.
Council President Lisa Hoffman agreed to sponsor the resolution for the memorandum, as it arrived too late for the city’s field and finance committees to review. Normally, late resolutions are sponsored by the mayor, but Mayor Bruce Milavitz was absent from the meeting.
