Mavis G. Steffen, 92, of Gillett, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
Mavis was born on Oct. 23, 1931, to the late Raymond and Gertrude (Strupp) Perschbacher in Advance. She graduated from Gillett High School with the class of 1950 and then attended Marinette County Teachers College, graduating in 1957.
For the first years of her career, Mavis taught at Kelly Lake, Pleasant Valley and Four Town School before settling at Gillett Elementary School. She had a memorable 34-year career, retiring in May 1993. Mavis married Willis “Bill” Steffen on May 28, 1960, at St. John Catholic Church in Gillett and they spent 43 loving years together before his passing in 2003.
She greatly enjoyed playing all kinds of card games and dominoes, watching the Game Show Network, baking cookies and spending time at the family cabin. Mavis was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and St. John Catholic Church.
Mavis is survived by her children, Judy, Mike and Joe; honorary “grandchildren,” Aaron, Amanda and Emily; “great-grandchildren,” Miles and Maverick. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; brothers, Victor (Betty) Perschbacher and Jerry Perschbacher.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, at St. John Catholic Church from 4-7 p.m. Visitation will resume on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at St. John Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until the Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Francis Dias officiating. Mavis will be interred at St. John Catholic Cemetery beside Bill.
