Any farm that applies its own manure on cropland and all custom manure spreading businesses are invited to have their personnel attend the annual manure applicator update meetings.
Two sessions being offered in the region, near Green Valley the afternoon of March 18 and near Birnamwood the afternoon of March 20.
The training emphasizes the steps and techniques manure applicators should take to maintain personal and community safety during manure application. In particular, there are discussions on spill prevention and response, understanding geological concerns, pressure and gas related safety, road safety and route planning, and understanding nutrient management plans.
Registration is required for these events by going to https://go.wisc.edu/2024manure101, and there is a $10 per person registration fee, which goes up to $15 at the door. Farms and businesses can register multiple people at once through this system.
These two events are hosted on farms and feature a question-and-answer session and group discussion. Discussion will be led by Kevin Erb, manager of the conservation professional training program for University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension, and Scott Reuss, regional crops and soils educator.
