Former Gillett School District Superintendent Todd Carlson is prowling the halls again, serving what is expected to be about a one-month stint as interim superintendent.
Dr. Wayne Johnson was hired as interim superintendent late in 2022 when Todd Hencsik’s terminal illness forced him to take a medical leave. Johnson agreed to serve as superintendent after Hencsik passed away last May. After the Feb. 15 Gillett School Board meeting, Carlson said Johnson has taken a personal leave and will be back around mid-March.
Johnson is then expected to serve until the end of the district's fiscal year, when newly hired superintendent Nathan Hanson is scheduled to take over.
Carlson served as superintendent from 2013 until he retired in 2020. He came out of retirement once before as interim superintendent in Suring two years ago and still lives in the Gillett area.
He told the board he was enjoying getting reacquainted with the school, staff and students.
“It’s really been a pleasure to come back into Gillett and to work with some people; I can put a face to a name now,” Carlson said. “Thank you for allowing me to come back. I really appreciate that. I’ve gotten to know a lot of the new staff members as well; I think that’s positive. It’s been a really nice time here.”
Carlson is a 1977 graduate of Gillett High School. He spent more than half of his career in Suring, rising from an internship to superintendent before becoming top administrator in Shawano in 2007 and then returning to his alma mater.
