Doris Marie Buchholz

Doris Marie Buchholz, 98, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Birch Hill Nursing Home in Shawano. Doris was born in rural Bonduel on May 4, 1923, to the late Albert and Adela (Graf) Barkhaus. She was a lifelong resident of the Bonduel area. Doris attended the neighborhood country school and, later, St. Paul Lutheran School. She was an excellent student and was the first valedictorian of Bonduel High School in 1941. She went on to business school in Oshkosh. Doris was the bookkeeper at Dehn’s Ice Cream Factory until she was married to Raymond Buchholz on May 11, 1946. They later bought her family farm and were progressive dairy farmers. Raymond preceded her in death in 2003. Doris loved gardening and raised a large vegetable garden and many flowers. She preserved food to feed her large family in the winter. Doris and Raymond retired in 1982 and then moved to Bonduel. Doris was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and enjoyed being a Mission Circle member. She and Raymond were 4-H leaders for many years and taught sewing and gardening. She was also a member of the Homemakers for over 70 years. Doris will always be remembered for her many hours of volunteer work at the Bethesda Thrift Store and her good appetite. Raymond and Doris loved to travel and traveled much of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. They also went to Europe, Mexico and parts of Canada, including the World’s Fair in Montreal. Doris is survived by her children, Marie Piebenga, of Tucson, Arizona, Edward (Ruth) Buchholz, of Bonduel, Karen (Daniel) Brugger, of Black Creek, Diane (Stephen) Bradshaw, of Clarkson, Georgia, and Joyce (Robert) Shest, of Bonduel; her three grandchildren, Robert (Andrea) Brugger, of Wabeno, Michelle (David) Gordon, of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Elena Shest, of Minneapolis. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; her parents, Albert and Adela; her son, John; her grandson, John Shest; her son-in law, Gordon Piebenga; her brother, Louis (Hazel) Barkhaus; her sister, Elaine (Oscar) Kohls; and her in-laws Hubert (Fern) Buchholz, Ruben (Elaine) Buchholz and Laura (Roger) Roundy. Funeral services for Doris will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel on Friday, April 8, 2022, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held at Swedberg Wendt Funeral Home on Thursday, April 7, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. and then again on Friday at the church at 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
