Kenneth L. Askenette Sr., 57, of Neopit, passed away on Monday, Oct. 4, 2021. Kenneth was born on July 6, 1964, to the late Marvin “Steve” and Joyce (Wayka) Askenette Sr. in Shawano. He attended St. Anthony’s grade school and graduated from Menominee Indian High School in 1981. During high school, Kenneth played basketball and baseball.
Growing up in Neopit, Kenneth was one of the Dog Town Soldiers. They all had a special handshake when meeting each other. Kenneth attended community college in Minnesota. He volunteered with Guardian Angels Neighborhood Watch when he lived in Minneapolis. Kenneth worked at Little Earth Housing as a security officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He also worked at the Mystic Lake Casino in Shakopee, Minnesota.
On June 13, 2015, he was united in marriage to Nanine Waupoose. After moving back to the area, he was employed at Menominee Casino Resort and the Menominee Mill. Lastly, he worked at the Menominee Tribal Clinic as a facility maintenance worker. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing for trout and bass on the Wolf River, playing euchre with his buddies, watching UFC on television and custom car shows.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Nanine “Nanie” Askenette; children, Kenneth (SO Joana Galindo) Askenette Jr. and Peter Askenette; stepson, Brennan Waupoose; grandson, Kalib Askenette; siblings, Gerald “Joe Swede” (Arlene) Wayka Sr., Barbara (Brian) Tepiew, Marvin (Elsie) Askenette, Jean Pierre (Deb) Askenette and Cheyenne Askenette.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Joyce Askenette; three sisters, Brenda, Glenda and Karen Askenette; and brother, Jamie Askenette.
A funeral service for Kenneth will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit. Visitation will be held at the Gerald Wayka Sr. residence at W2821 Lakeview North, Keshena, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, from 2 p.m. until the procession leaves for the church on Friday.
