New scam has callers posing as county employees

Shawano County law enforcement officials have been made aware of a scam that has impacted other counties and has started targeting local residents.

Individuals posing as county employees are contacting applicants listed in public hearing and meeting notices and requesting additional payments to complete an application or process.

Know that Shawano County employees will never contact applicants to request payment beyond any established application or processing fees. All official payments must be submitted through the proper channels, and any additional payment requests made by phone, text or email should be treated as suspicious.

If you receive a request that seems unusual or demands additional payment:

• Do not provide any personal or financial information.

• Contact the relevant department directly to verify the request.

• Report the incident to local law enforcement, the county clerk’s office or both.
