Morton R. Newcomb

Morton R. Newcomb, 83, Wittenberg, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at his home. He was born on March 24, 1932, in Jefferson County, the son of the late Clyde and Evelyn (Smithback) Newcomb. Mort was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post 502. On June 22, 1963, Mort was united in marriage to Alene Diestler in Wittenberg. She survives. Mort worked as an electrician for a few years and then owned and operated the antique store in Wittenberg for many years. He enjoyed gardening, cutting wood and being outdoors. He also was a sports fan and enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers. Mort was always willing to help out others and enjoyed his time with friends and family. Survivors include his wife, Alene Newcomb, Wittenberg; four daughters, Beth (Jim) Breske, Hatley, Mary Newcomb, Fort Atkinson, Carrie (Troy) Zernzach, Redgranite, and Cathy (Craig) Kolbeck, Algoma; two sons, Mort (Lisa) Newcomb, Oshkosh, and Tom (Heather) Newcomb, Columbus; nine grandchildren, Austin, Halle, Cassidy, John, Caitlyn, Ray, Tyler, Ella and Jacob; one sister, Mary Simonds, Mequon; and four brothers, Bud Newcomb, Embarrass, Austin Newcomb, Ringle, Clyde Newcomb, Kentucky, and Ron Newcomb, Wausau. He is also survived by other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Mort was preceded in death by one brother, James Newcomb. A memorial gathering will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg. Military rites will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday by the Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post 502 at the funeral home.
