A Menasha man who was wanted in connection with a domestic disturbance died early Tuesday after his speeding SUV slammed head-on into a semitrailer and burst into flames.
Keith L. Carpenter, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said. He was the sole occupant of the SUV.
The collision happened Tuesday about 12:45 a.m. on state Highway 29 near state Highway 160.
While deputies were investigating the crash, Menasha police issued an alert that were looking for Carpenter on a report of a domestic disturbance a few hours earlier.
Witnesses say Carpenter’s SUV was originally going in the same direction as the semi, then sped passed it and turned around. They said the SUV turned off its lights moments before slamming into the semi.
The collision resulted in a large spill of diesel fuel. The SUV caught fire and burned until fire officials put it out.
Highway 29 was closed for about six hours in both directions. The semi driver and a passenger in the semi sustained nonlife-threatening injuries.
