Man drowns in Shawano Lake

A 56-year-old West Allis man drowned in Shawano Lake on Friday after trying to rescue his dog, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said. Steven Olewinski and his wife, Mary Jo, along with their dogs, were in a boat on the lake near Weber’s Point in the northwest corner of the lake. Shortly before 11:30 a.m., one of the dogs jumped into the water and Olewinski went in to retrieve it, the Sheriff’s Department said. Olewinski drifted away from the boat and was unable to reach the life preserver his wife had thrown to him. She went into the lake after him, but was unable to reach him before he disappeared under the water. Olewinski was found deceased at 1:49 p.m. His wife and the dog were found floating safely with the life preserver, the Sheriff’s Department said. The Sheriff’s Department dive team and boat patrol responded to the incident, along with Shawano Ambulance and the Department of Natural Resources.
