The Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood enjoyed its busiest year in 2013. Officials reported close to 500 visitors toured the restored museum, the oldest logging camp sitting on the site where it was built.
One of the attractions was the artifact display updated by Camp Manager Bob Brown and his wife, Pam.
“Having so many folks visit during our Saturday tours was wonderful, but our primary mission is education,” said Kathleen Marsh, camp curator.
More than 250 fourth-graders experienced lumberjack life and lore this year, and for the first time, a group of high school students will visit this month.
Unfortunately, all the activity this summer stirred up the building’s thriving bat population.
“The staff is used to coexisting with them, but many of our guests are not,” Brown said.
Casey Glander, of Northeast Wildlife Removal, and his wife, Sarah, bat-proofed the cookshack on Aug. 26, allowing the bats to exit but not return.
The last 2013 public event sponsored by the Friends of the Logging Camp will be a Red Light Saloon Music and Comedy Revue at 2 and 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Townsend Town Hall. In tribute to the importance of railroads to the logging industry, a railroad-themed show will be staged. Tickets are $8 and are available at the door only. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase.
